Coconut Chair

This is a ‘Coconut’ Lounge Chair, initially designed by George Nelson for Herman Miller in 1955. This is an early example, dating to the 1950s. The design features a molded, reinforced plastic shell, and this particular chair has an upholstered white vinyl seat. The shell sits atop a triangular chromed-steel frame. Nelson’s decision to name this model “the Coconut Chair” stemmed from his feeling that the shape resembled a slice of coconut.
The chair measures 32.5 inches long, 40.25 inches wide, and 32.75 inches tall. The seat height is 11.5 inches. We have intentionally left this piece in its original, as-found condition to showcase its history. There is substantial wear to the vinyl, with several rips and stains. The white plastic shell shows some scratches and stains. Overall, this original chair is in fair condition. We can facilitate a full restoration of the piece upon request. Please see photos.
